How healthy is your kitchen?

I’m not talking about how clean you keep your countertops or how many organic vegetables are neatly organized in your fridge; nor am I concerned with the state of the dishes, sink or your small wastebasket designated for composting. What I am talking about is how well your kitchen supports healthy food choices.

Yes, that is correct. Your kitchen makes decisions that affect your health.

The environment of the most important room in the house greatly dictates how one approaches food.

Traditionally, the kitchen was the center of activity in the home. In the Vedic science of establishment called sthapatya veda, the kitchen is the furnace from which warmth and life springs. In feng shui, the kitchen represents nourishment and prosperity, sustaining life. And in many other societies, the kitchen acts as a sphere of social, familial, and political connectivity. Literally, the center of life, the kitchen radiates heat, replenishes energy and connects society.

Today, however, the kitchen has become a wasteland of shiny appliances and unused barren spaces. Once the largest room in the home, the kitchen has now been reduced to a mere box. Barriers divide it from the rest of the house, keeping it segregated and confined.

The modern kitchen, rather than inciting words like warmth, comfort and love, is instead synonymous with adjectives like sterile and sanitary. It is no wonder we do not know how to feed ourselves. The very instrument used to create nourishment has been transformed into a metallic machine incapable of inspiring the brightest souls.

In order to reclaim our health, we must first reclaim the kitchen.

Eating the Universe

What is food?  Have you ever really stopped to ask yourself this question?  I mean, we eat it everyday, we buy it at the grocery store, and we order it in restaurants, but do we ever really take the time to understand exactly what it is we are putting into our bodies?

This was a question that forever changed my relationship with food.

Like many people, I enjoyed a diet of no restrictions.  You know, the whenever-I’m-hungry-for-whatever-I-want diet.  It was a successful diet in the sense that I did not die. But in many ways it was extremely unhealthy. I certainly put on a few pounds and lacked any sort of energetic enthusiasm. Yet my hunger was quenched and my desires satisfied. This was how I lived most of my life.

Then after x amount of time studying food and learning about life, I came across a book that brought me to an amazing revelation: when we eat, we are eating the sun.

Five Simple Ways to Eat Healthier

In my last article, I shared ideas about the specific foods I eat in order to support a sound body, mind, and spirit. This week, I’d like to switch the focus from what I eat to how I eat.

Most Americans do not know how to eat. Well let me rephrase that. Most Americans eat a certain way: fast, efficiently, and based on sustenance. This is definitely one way to eat. It is easy on the wallet, fitted for lives set to fast-forward, and satisfies hunger. With all that said, I would argue most elephant readers don’t aspire to follow or continue this trend.

As I have come to understand my personal diet, I recognize the importance of its extension beyond specific foods and into the realm of practice. A lot of my dietary evolutions have included techniques and philosophies that guide what I eat, how I eat, and how I do not eat.  I’ve compiled a list of 5 different ideas that have helped me obtain a healthier lifestyle and greater appreciation of food.
